Herbert C. Blutenthal ,CFA

Managing Director

Mr. Blutenthal joined Hartline in April 1994 having over 30 years of experience in finance and investments. He is a 1958 graduate of Oberlin College with an A.B. in Economics, and later received an M.B.A. in Finance from Northwestern University in 1960. He also received the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1967.

His career has involved a breadth of experience including portfolio management and research at Continental Bank beginning in 1960 and later served as Vice President and Director of Research at LaSalle National Bank. He has brokerage industry experience with Mesirow & Co. where he served as Manager of Investment Research. He has investor relations experience with Bliss & Laughlin Industries, a NYSE company, and has been a management consultant in his own business.

Prior to joining Hartline, Mr. Blutenthal was Assistant Vice President for Investments for the University of Chicago where he served for more than eleven years as a member of the investment management group responsible for supervision of the endowment and other assets of the University. This work also included venture capital limited partnership investing, for which he had primary responsibility.

This experience enabled Mr. Blutenthal to become familiar with equity investments in small and medium sized private companies as well as the public companies utilized by most money managers. His appreciation for the entrepreneur and the ingredients for successful building of a company bring excellent complementary skills to the Hartline team.

Herb is a director and member of the investment committee of the Chicago Child Care Society and a member of the CFA Society of Chicago. He and his wife Lucy live in Glencoe, Illinois, and have two children, David and Betsy.
